こんにちは、四日市のこんこうさんです！

自称・園芸部長の夫が、5月中旬にサツマイモを植えてくれました。

「手がかからない」と言われるサツマイモですが、植え付け直後は水やりが大切です。ところが、うっかり3日間そのままにしてしまい、青々としていた葉っぱが見るも無残なしおれた姿に……。

不作を恐れた私は、追加で苗を買ってきて隣に植えました。

すると、「少し傷んだくらいのほうが生命力が強くなって、美味しく育つ」とも言われるサツマイモ。しおれていた苗も、少しずつ元気を取り戻してきました。

さらに夫は、野良猫対策として、トゲトゲのプラスチックシートを畑の周りに敷いてくれました。

どうやら畑は、野良猫たちにとって絶好のトイレ場所だったようで、以前には母猫と子猫3匹が並んで用を足している姿を見たこともありました。

サツマイモを育てる私たちとしては困ってしまいますが、猫たちにも猫たちなりの事情があります。もしかすると、別にトイレ場所を作ってあげる必要があるのかもしれません。

天地のお働きと、サツマイモ自身の生命力によって育っていく畑。

野良猫たちにも「ここは畑なんだよ」と少しずつ分かってもらいながら、この秋には、こんこうさんの畑がサツマイモでいっぱいになりそうです。

My husband, the self-proclaimed director of our shrine garden club, planted sweet potatoes in mid-May.

Although sweet potatoes are said to be easy to grow, they do need water right after planting. Unfortunately, I accidentally left them unattended for three days, and their fresh green leaves became terribly wilted.

Worried about a poor harvest, I bought additional slips and planted them beside the original ones.

Interestingly, people say that sweet potatoes grow stronger and sweeter after experiencing a little stress. Thankfully, the damaged plants have gradually started to recover.

My husband also placed spiky plastic sheets around the garden to keep stray cats away.

Apparently, our garden had become a perfect toilet spot for them. At one point, I even saw three kittens using the garden together with their mother cat.

As people growing sweet potatoes there, we cannot allow the garden to become a litter box. At the same time, the cats also need a place to go, so perhaps we may need to prepare another spot for them.

Through the workings of Heaven and Earth and the plants’ own life force, the sweet potatoes continue to grow.

While helping the stray cats understand that this is a garden, it seems our shrine field may be full of sweet potatoes this autumn.
